His son, Dale, received a National Heritage Foundation fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. President Clinton wrote him a letter of congratulations and he and his wife, Joanne, went to Washington, D. C. to receive this at a formal event in the east room of the White House. Mrs Hillary Clinton presented the awards. In 1986, he was invited to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D. C. to build a boat as part of the "Festival of American Folklife".
